New COVID Guidelines will be in place at Alphington Sports Medicine Exercise + Rehabilitation, from Friday 22 October 2021, to provide an environment where the risks of exposure to COVID-19 is managed to the best of our ability.
These Guidelines are for the safety of all on our premises (patients, practitioners, staff, and visitors), and to keep our business open to provide medical services to the public.
Great news – all our services will be back up and running by the end of the week!
In line with the Victorian Government's announcement on the easing of COVID restrictions, the following changes will come into effect at our Clinic from Friday morning (22 October):
With the 2021 AFL season now complete, we chatted with Alphington Sports Medicine Clinic Podiatrist Emma Poynton about her involvement with the Western Bulldogs Football Club.
How and when did you become involved with the Bulldogs?
I first became involved with the Western Bulldogs at the end of 2014 in preparation for the 2015 AFL season. Then in 2016, when the AFL established an AFLW program, I joined the club’s medical team who also care for the AFLW football department.
Did you know that was it this week way back in 1981 that Alphington Sports Medicine Clinic first opened its doors!
Established by Peter and Katherine Harcourt (both still current Directors), then later joined by Jill Cook and Steve Evans (dec.), the original Clinic was in Wingrove Street, near Alphington station. It offered only Sports Medicine and Physiotherapy. At the time, Sports Medicine barely existed as a discipline and there were no guidelines as to how it should be done. Alphington was a trail blazer!
With the 2021 AFL season now complete, we chatted with one of our Massage Therapists, Brooke Skaf, about her involvement in the AFL with the Carlton Football Club (Blues).
How and when did you become involved with the AFL and the Blues?
I became involved with the Carlton Football Club in 2017. For the first 3 years, I was only working during the week for their training sessions but in 2020 I also became a game day trainer as well.
** UPDATE: This session (plus an additional one on 20 November) is now FULLY BOOKED. Please email us if you would like to go on the wait list for either of these dates **

Dr Gaylene McKay has been the Opals (Australian Women’s Basketball Team) Physiotherapist for 7 years and travelled with them many times for camps and tournaments. But this year she had the privilege of supporting them in Tokyo for the 2020 Olympics!
Now that she’s back in Australia we asked her to spend some of her hotel quarantine time telling us a bit about the experience . . . .
How did it feel to go to the Olympics and support one of the teams representing Australia?
Banana bread is so 2020. Whether you’ve run out of things to bake during lockdown or you’re looking for an activity to keep the kids busy (and off their screens), you must give these muffins a try. They’re super easy to make, and don’t contain all the added sugars and additives that your local cafe or supermarket varieties contain. Enjoy these delicious, well-portioned cakes as a pick-me-up between meals or as an evening sweet treat.
While Dr Gaylene McKay, our Managing Director and the Lead Physiotherapist for the Opals, is now back in Australia and in quarantine, she did manage to send through a few last pics from her time at the Olympics.
She even rubbed shoulders with a few famous (non-basketball) faces while watching the Boomers vs USA before leaving Tokyo . . .
More great photos from the Olympics thanks to Alphington Sports Medicine's Managing Director & Opals Lead Physiotherapist, Dr Gaylene McKay.
The team had a huge win last night in Game 4 against Puerto Rico – let’s hope they can keep that momentum going when they face USA in the quarter finals tomorrow!
