Our very own Miranda Wallis (physiotherapist) has been seconded to the Australia Institute of Sport leading up to London 2012. She gives us this update..

After another successful Gliders camp, I started my new adventure with the AIS Physical Therapies department on the Friday after Australia Day.  This first day I was left to my own devices to organise IT to get my computer going, find my way to the uniform store and just generally get to know my way around the people and places that make up the AIS....

My main role in the department will be to look after the AIS men’s volleyball program. I’ve only been to one training session so far but what an incredible sport! We all know that volleyball is a “jumping” sport, but to actually sit and watch a session gives a huge appreciation for the number and intensity of jumps those poor patella tendons have to deal with!  As far as I can tell, the major role of the physio is working with the coaching staff on load management, especially with those new to the program and working with the strength and conditioning staff on rehab and injury prevention.  On a personal note, I’m yet to meet all of the team but those I have met are lovely and it seems I’ll have a lot of laughs working with them.

I’m also off to Japan for a couple of weeks in March with the women’s AIS team, to stay at the Japanese equivalent of the AIS.  This is after my trip to Osaka with the Gliders, so I get the feeling I’ll be a very busy girl this year...

I’m loving my time so far – it’s only early days, but I can see myself enjoying the next 6 months immensely.

Take care...

Miranda
